Can you reverse brain damage caused by alcohol?

I read this, but was a bit taken back when it mentioned that after 6 months of sobriety, visuo-spatial skills were still poor and there was only a partial reversal of cognition.

I ask because i abused alcohol in the first year (it became an everyday thing) and when i was 15-17 was doing the whole teenage kicks. I decided enough was enough, and started to limit drinking to only 2 or 3 pints a week (moderate/social). I’ve noticed that my motivation has improved and I am starting to get on top of my psychology degree again. But I am worried that I may not be able to achieve optimum function. Is there any drugs (nootropics) or programmes you can go on to return to optimum mental cognition? I ask because I want to get a First degree. thanks

Once brain cells are damaged that’s it!

Put simply, brain damage can never be reversed. Brain cells do not have the ability to replicate. You loose em, they’re gone for good.

nope, brain cells can’t be repaired. once they die/are damaged, they’re gone

    Hello,

(ANS) The question you are asking is purely academic or theoretical in nature, although I understand your fears & anxieties though. To be honest with you there is "no way" to really know how your alcoholic habits have affected your brain or mind.

**The only way this could be ascertained would be to have taken part in a scientific or medical study on the effects of alcohol on brain functioning. i.e. actually measuring brain functionality before & after alcohol.

**If you really want to frighten the living day lights out of yourself then there are plenty of medical & scientific papers written on this very subject. i.e. the effects of alcohol on the mind or brain.

**We are born with a complete & fully working brain (organ of perception, cognition) with over a billion brain cells. From the day we are born we start loosing brain cells, many many of these cannot be replaced. Substance abuse would only speed up the rate of cell loss or cell damage.

Conclusion:- No! brain cells don’t get regenerated or regrow over time as far as I understand this. Any serious damage to the human body cannot ever really be 100% un-done. Even though the human body will always try to heal itself as best as possible.

**You already know all this anyway if your studying psychology?

All the above is bullshit. The body as well as the brain can heal itself. Give it some time.
