6 years of depression and im wearing thin. what can i do?

okay well first of let me tell you how it all started.

my mum suffers from depression and i believe i inherited it from her.

when i was 10 i was involved in a incident that involved 8 months of recovery and seeing doctors on and off again for 3 years plus. which was really stressful on me, this is when i believe i developed my depression.

that situation coupled with being bullied from grade one to the time of the incident, to present day. now im 16.

when i was 13, i started high school, i lasted no more than one and a half terms at the max. before i was taken out because of being abused at school, sexually, physically and emotionally. i became suicidal but luckily never followed through with it. i saw countless amounts of psychologists and all those kind of people. nothing helped.

i refused to take anti-depressants because i had to watch my mum take them all my childhood life.

now im 16, usual teenage life is taking its toll on me, ive left school, started drinking, smoking and some minor drug use. and im starting to show some signs of schizophrenia, mood swings and hearing voices in my head occasionally. which were not caused by the drugs because they started prior to it. also i have mild insomnia and usually have nightmares.

i dont really know what to do anymore. ive refused to take anti-depressants for so long. but i am actually considering it now.. some advice please?

First thing is rehabilitation from the drugs. If you are dependant on drugs, alcohol and tobacco and try to sort out your life you’ll find you are more than likely not to succeed.

Also depends what you are doing now, you’ve left school so you;re not being bullied and abused. Though if you were sexually and physically abused you may want to make a police report. Not only because their crimes, but a lot of peopl ewho have suffered like that end up having little or no confidence and usually give up easily. Seeing these poeople going to jail can help you feel better and boost your confidence etc.

A bit more serious is moving towns if possible. It’s a big step but living in the town where all this happened can be stressful, a new town can make you feel more at ease as its a new environment, really depends on the person, a new environment can end up having negative effects as well.

Socialise with old firends or meet new people, travel around a bit. Sticking to one place all your life can also be stressful. Meeting people relaxes people.
Also it’d help to have a good frend who you can confide in who can help eg make sure you dont take drugs etc and help clean you up.

Take part in sports or find a hobby to keep the mind active.

Bascially there are many things that you can do, but the problem is that it’s you who has to do them, if you do not take the first step then nothing will happen.

First thing is, don’t refuse to take the anti-depressants. You’re turning down the thing that can help you most.

Drinking is terrible for depression, alcohol is a CNS depressant.

And drugs like pot are terrible for schizophrenia, pot can trigger a psychotic break. Avoid hallucinogens too, like acid and shrooms. These are very dangerous for you.

Schizophrenia is a very serious illness, but it isn’t untreatable. Whatever your previous experience with psychologists, you need to be seeing a psychiatrist regularly, so it doesn’t go out of control.

I wouldn’t worry about smoking right now, nicotine is an antidepressant and withdrawal would be very difficult for you.

Essentially, what you have to do is switch from the drugs that aren’t right for you — alcohol, pot, and so forth — to the ones that are, like antidepressants and if necessary antipsychotics to treat the voices. A psychiatrist will help you do that, it’s what he studied for and devotes his entire life to.
