You want to help people or do you want a career. There is a chasm of a difference there.
To help people all you need is some free time, true concern for individuals that ask for help.
If you want to make it a career, that’s ok also, remember to help whenever you are asked, if you are able to.
Go to whatever Non Profit Substance Abuse clinic is near you, offer to help. People need help, that is why they go to the clinics. And those that are asking for help are the ones that actually want it, its a 50/50 if they will accept it or if it will take, but you can do your best to help them.
I volunteered at a local Crisis Line thing, later attended some classes in Phsycology and stuff, and had a few successes.
In all my years the best Substance Abuse person was a recovering addict themselves. The Dr. had been sober for 25 years, so he knew it from both sides.
But that is not the experience that I would suggest for anybody, it just helps.
AA,NA, and those type programs seem to work, and good Clinical Technicians are always a plus to a person that wants help.

I go to substace abuse counseling for addiction. I have come to the conclusion that counselors that were addicted themselves make the best counselors because they know what is really going on inside the head of an addict. Counselors that are book smart really don’t have an understanding of drug addiction.
