    Positive feedback is a cycle which reinforces itself, and therefore grows stronger.

    In this case, if you assume that treatment of alcoholism/drug abuse is an unpleasant focus on certain realities, then that could result in increased desire to escape reality and a reinforced cycle to repeat.
