can a drug addict be healthy?
Written on November 4, 2009 – 11:27 am | by Drug Abuse Help
I had been told for years that my uncle abused drugs. Painkillers for almost ten years. Well my uncle passed away suddenly and we were all thinking that he overdosed. Well not only did he not overdose the coroner said my uncle had healthy organs and he died of head injury that happened earlier in the day and he never got treatment for. So I ask myself how could he be abusing drugs for years and his organs look normal?

Nov 04, 09 at 7:06 amHI depending on the drugs your uncle took and if it was a known factor that he overdosed all the time. Just because he took pain killers for ten years doesn’t mean he abused them, unless he was taking too many etc. Many people live on pain killers to help them with severe pain. It all depends on the type of drug some pain killers are not deadly to the organs after years of taking. If he was shooting them it would be a different story. Over a lifetime of taking normal pain killers you would probably see some degeneration of the organs. Usually it is the liver and kidneys that suffer. I hope this helps. I’m sorry about your uncle.

However, if he was abusing them it is most likely his body had grown accustomed to it. A frightful idea. That typically happens in the most severe cases.
12-step meetings, rehab and other resources are great tools for relapse prevention. I’m sorry to hear about your uncle. Keep us posted.
