Should I major in Social Work or Psychology to help drug addicts?

I am a recovered addict with a desire to help other addicts.

I only plan to get a bachelor’s degree. Currently my major is officially Psychology with a Substance Abuse concentration. Last semester I decided to change to Social Work because it seemed more like what I wanted to do–just help addicts in their current situations.

It’s almost time to register for the spring semester, and I’ve got to make a real choice now. There’s no other classes I can take that will apply to both degree’s and I don’t want to waste any more time on classes that won’t go towards my degree. And I’ve already got 21 or more hours of electives.

My social work classes seem to come more natural to me but are extremely boring. I’ve only taken 1 psychology class and it’s really hard, but the section on drug abuse was sooooooo interesting. I’ve also just realized that the university I attend offers another degree that sounds similar to what I’m interested in.

My university offers three 4 year degrees that I am interested in:

B.A. Social Work
B.S. in Psychology with Substance Abuse specialization
B.S. in Addiction Studies

Any ideas as to which degree would earn the most in Louisiana? Also which degree program has the easiest course load? Not to sound lazy, but I’m a 30 year old single mom, working full time in retail. Realistically, I don’t want to pursue something that will end up being so hard that I drop out.

My long term goal is hopefully opening a sober living facility for women and their children.
