For a school survey please tell me your own views on the two following subjects.
1) Young people and people suffering from a mental illness & have drug and alcohol abuse/use issues. How do you view this group?
2) What are your beliefs for this group?
Thanks in advance.

Oct 18, 09 at 3:27 pmI’m an RN who specializes in psych/substance abuse treatment. In my opinion, mental illness and substance abuse are like the chicken and the egg. It’s hard to say which came first in a lot of patients. I have seen some who developed mental illness (not just depression or anxiety disorders, but also schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorder with true psychotic symptoms) as a direct result of substance abuse (chronic AND one-time users). Then you have the patients who use to self-medicate because of their mental illness. At any rate, once a patient gets into that vicious cycle, the two problems just feed off of each other. To get someone out of that cycle takes the proper medication, regular psychotherapy, a very structured living arrangement, an incredibly strong support system, and a truly willing patient (which can be, and often is, the most difficult piece of the puzzle). Sorry to be so long-winded, but this is a topic I am VERY passionate about. (Can ya tell? LOL)
